He was close to Impressionism, having studied in Paris and Berlin. His works include portraits of Gerhart Hauptmann , Ernst Barlach , Emil Nolde , Käthe Kollwitz and Eugen d 'Albert .
The arrival of the Nazis to power did not put an end to his career, even if Hitler himself disliked him.
